Controls Engineer

Below is a typical “Controls Engineer ” job description of many of my clients:

The Controls Engineer will include automation and controls systems design, PLC/SCADA programming, simulation and testing, and start-up commissioning. The ideal candidate must have a proven track record in developing advanced PLC logic and programming with any or all of the following software vendors: Allen Bradley,; and HMI/SCADA programming.

Controls Engineer Responsibilities

  • Must be able to create and read logic and flow diagrams for program design, programming, simulation and testing, and start-up.
  • Provide detailed documentation upon project completion
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks and maintain schedule for multiple projects as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.
  • Ability to evaluate and convey contractual scope of work and the impact scheduling changes to the assigned project manager.
  • Background in electrical and instrumentation wiring and troubleshooting an asset.
  • Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential.
  • Can conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem- solving capabilities.
  • Electrical design/drafting experience with AutoCAD is a definite asset.
  • Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new software and technologies

Controls Engineer Requirements:

  • Degree in Electrical/Electronics or Computer Engineering with an emphasis in mechanical or process engineering preferred.
  • Candidate must have┬ábe authorized to work in USA for any employee
  • PLC experience – minimum 5 years.
  • 2-5 years direct work experience programming, testing and commissioning advanced control systems with appropriate college or graduate degree. Direct work experience programming, testing and commissioning advanced control systems in a variety of industries (i.e. Food Processing, Water/Wastewater, Automotive, Pharmaceutical, Chemical, Mining etc.)
  • 10 years of manufacturing engineering experience with proven engineering project management skills. Direct work experience programming, testing and commissioning advanced control systems in a variety of manufacturing industries.
  • Possesses advanced knowledge in the areas of system integration, plant floor automation, application programming, database and system design and has a thorough understanding of our capabilities.
  • Must be able to diagnose mechanical problems;
  • Experience starting up new lines or a new plant is highly preferred.
  • Experience reading electrical schematics/wiring diagrams and PI&D drawings.

Typical Salary $85,000 – $110,000 a year.
